French Quarter Festivals, Inc. Announces Spirit of Satchmo Award Winners
During the Satchmo SummerFest kickoff party Aug. 1, FQFI will honor three individuals for their commitment to preserving and honoring Armstrong’s legacy with a “Spirit of Satchmo Award.” The awards focus on performance, education, and advocacy, and the 2019 winners are Jackie Harris, Corey Henry, and Ricky Riccardi.
Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron began as a way to commemorate the musician’s 100th birthday. It has grown into a three-day event filled with the music of New Orleans’ finest traditional and contemporary jazz musicians and brass bands on the Fidelity Bank and GE Stages, fascinating lectures by world-renowned Satchmo scholars on the Hilton Satchmo Legacy Stage, and fare from some of New Orleans’ most notable restaurants. Satchmo SummerFest also showcases New Orleans’ most important indigenous traditions, such as a Sunday morning Jazz Mass at the historic St. Augustine Church in Tremé and a traditional second line parade. Other special events include the kickoff party at the historic Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (the official hotel of Satchmo SummerFest) and a Trumpet Tribute to close the festival. A modest $6 daily admission helps support local musicians and pay for the event.
