The First Congress of Asian-Australasian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (AASPN) and Inaugural Meeting convened March 20-22 at the Evergreen International Conference Center with around 300 domestic and foreign scholars and research students in attendance.

The event promoted academic exchange between Taiwan and Asian-Australasian regions, improved the international academic position of domestic pediatric neurosurgery, and expanded Taiwan’s competitiveness and influence in the Asian-Australasian region.

The first preparatory AASPN conference was held in 2012; Asian pediatric neurosurgery experts Tai-Tong Wong, Reizo Shirane, Chandrashekhar Deopujari, Jie Ma, Kyu-Chang Wang, and others gathered to plan the Asian-Australasian region’s first international pediatric neurosurgery association and the promotion of treatment, academic discussion, medical research, and educational programs in pediatric neurosurgery across the region. After a year of preparation, the AASPN was officially founded on September 7, 2014, in Seoul, Korea, with Taiwan’s senior specialist, Di-Dong Huang, M.D., elected as the first Chairman. National Taiwan University Hospital’s Meng-Fei Kuo, M.D. was appointed President of the General Assembly and hosted the foundational conference during its March 2015 appearance in Taipei.

For the inaugural meeting, Asia-Pacific, American, and European pediatric neurosurgery scholars were invited to deliver keynote speeches. In addition to sharing new knowledge and participating in academic discussion, they also exchanged insights on medical issues specific to the Asian-Australasian region, plus simultaneously proposed transnational research and investigative projects in hopes of enhancing the quality of research in the region. An inauguration ceremony was held during the meeting, with pediatric neurosurgery experts of the Asian-Australasian region to witness the special event. The international conference encouraged more interaction between Taiwan, the AASPN, and the international community, promoted domestic research and development in related fields, increased international awareness, and improved the international academic status of Taiwan.
