As we snaked around the corner on our way from Nha Trang this eye catching resort came into view poised delicately atop a cliff and with villas sprawling down to the beach one of our group screeched,

“Ooh look at that, wouldn’t it be good if we were staying there.” As we drove another 500 metres our excitement heightened as the vehicle slowed and we entered the amazing Mia Resort.

This property was one of the many highlights of travel company Footsteps in Asia’s educational tour with a group of senior Australian journalists. www.footstepsinasia.com

On arrival I asked a couple who turned out to be Aussies how they were enjoying their stay. They both raved about the facilities at the resort and said how lucky they were to have found it on a search engine.

Built by Australian, Peter Vidotto this new property is still a well-kept secret with fantastic facilities and extremely competitive prices. Vidotto arrived in Vietnam 19 years ago with not much more than his surfboard. Since then he has amassed a portfolio of classy properties in his adopted country and the Mia Resort is the jewel in the crown.

Although the band Abba was featuring at that time the name has nothing to do with them, Mia in Vietnamese means sugar cane and the resort was built on a plantation.

Set on the slopes of the Nha Trang mountain range and nestled into a quiet bay surrounded by jungle and the pristine waters of the East Sea, the resort is 20 minutes north of Nha Trang airport. The 27 sea-view villas are made from natural materials, fitted with all modern conveniences and guests stay in the lap of luxury.  You can even have your own private plunge pool.

Included in the stunning grounds of the resort are two world class restaurants offering Vietnamese and international cuisine. The property can cater for major conferences and events, weddings, team building and is ideally suited to honeymooners and romantic stays. It has kids activities, six spa treatment rooms, a business centre, free Wi Fi and a complementary shuttle bus to Nha Trang for shopping or night life.

Designed for ultimate contemporary luxury living with an attentive staff, this is a relaxing and unique experience which will remain indelibly on your mind.

General Manager, Louis Walters learned his trade in South Africa and the Executive Chef Amy Baard is also South African.

When you arrive make sure you book a private seafood BBQ on the beach which will capture the imagination of the very discerninggourmet. Enjoy your own private bar where some of the world’s most exotic drinks are regularly produced and all just for you and your guests.

Vidotto also owns the Sailing Club, a sprawling bar on the beach in the heart of Nha Trang. Our visit coincided with the clubs 18th birthday and the Saturday night celebrations were something to behold. The venue was packed as guests partied to bands and entertainment into the wee small hours. “The Club caters for all comers during the day as a day resort and at night is transformed from a beachfront dining venue to a nightclub. When we were looking for a name, legally we couldn’t call it a bar” Vidotto explained. His properties include Louisiane Brewhouse, Sailing Club Nha Trang, Mia Resort Nha Trang, Mia Resort Mui Ne and soon to open Sailing Club Hoi An.

One has to ask as to the wisdom of building a resort at one of the world’s most typhoon prone areas.
