STRUTH a look at the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel

IN his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says Sydney lawyer and train buff, Jon Denovan found himself an accidental hotel receptionist in an almost-Fawlty Towers scenario this week while on a train-spotting visit to Brno in the Czech Republic.

In a note to STRUTH! Jon says that because the WIFI in his room was dodgy, he planted himself at the reception desk of the very small hotel to send a few messages home. But while tapping away, the receptionist suddenly announced: “I have to go home to get something, I’ll only be 15 minutes – if anybody comes in, just give them a key and swipe their credit card….”

The bemused Jon, who’s never worked in a hotel in his life, adds: “And in they came. Good thing they spoke English, even if broken English. They asked for a smoking room, but I didn’t know what rooms were smoking, if any.  She was 186cm (6ft) blonde, gorgeous and about 23 and he was…….well, he was just in a hurry.  I was thinking of telling him he should skip the smoking because he obviously wouldn’t need it, and just as discussions were getting difficult, the receptionist thankfully returned and sorted it all out….”

Jon reckons he’ll skip the WIFI if it’s dodgy in future, and just go for a nice long walk to find some interesting trains to photograph…
