The ICCA-TAIWAN MICE Bid Workshop, organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) in collaboration with the world’s most authoritative International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), closed April 01, 2015, in Taiwan’s third largest conference city of Taichung to great success. TAITRA organized the Workshop under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFA) as a Taiwan’s MICE Pilot Program project. The aim of the Workshop was to boost the competitiveness of MICE practitioners in central Taiwan.
Four global conference industry experts were invited to lecture: Mr. Eric Bakermans, Marketing Manager of Meetings, Conventions & Events, Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC); Mr. Jason Yeh, ICCA’s Asia-Pacific Chair, Mrs. Takako Kurosawa, International Sales & Marketing Director of PACIFICO Yokohama Japan and Mr. Noor Ahmad Hamid, ICCA’s Asia-Pacific Regional Director.Another ivited speaker, Dr. Wan-You Guo, Chief Neuroradiologist of the Radiology Department of the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, who led the team to bring the upcoming XXI Symposium Neuroradiologicum, World Congress of Neuroradiology, to Taiwan in 2018, shared his experience on winning the bid.Attendees of the Workshop were given hands-on bidding practice under the direct instruction of lecturers.
Taichung City Deputy Mayor Morgan Chang pointed out in his remarks that currently the total exhibition space in Taichung amounts to 35,000 square meters. To improve Taichung’s MICE hardware and software environment, the City Government is planning international exhibition and convention centers in both Shui-nan and Wu-ri Districts.Furthermore, PCOs and PEOs using those venues for MICE events will be sponsored by the City Government. Taichung intends to attract more international conventions and exhibitions and boost the local MICE economy. Chang also emphasized the value of the ICCA-TAIWAN MICE Bid Workshop to Taichung’s MICE industry. Through the training given by internationally renowned speakers matched with interaction and experience sharing between MICE professionals, Taichung’s overall MICE strength will be upgraded and the city will get closer to becoming the next star in Asia’s MICE market.
According to BOFA Chief Secretary Mr. Eugene Chen, the Taiwan Government has been devoting much effort to strengthening the MICE industry. One of the functions of the MICE Pilot Program, launched in 2012, is to support NGOs with the international bid process, as well as bring more international conferences to Taiwan. TAITRA Executive Vice President Mr. Walter Yeh stated that Taichung is an ideal environment for the MICE industry as vital criteria for accommodation and commerce, such as qualified exhibition and convention venues and five-star hotels, are not only already available, but are increasing. Yeh expects Taichung’s MICE business to grow significantly after the completion of the city’s international convention and exhibition centers. The Taichung Shui-nan Convention & Exhibition Center, under TAITRA’s highly experienced management, is anticipated to lead to further international cooperation. With more international conferences and exhibitions taking place in Taichung, the city’s MICE industry will be upgraded to a much more global scope.
The two-day workshop attracted MICE professionals and representatives from NGOs, colleges, and government agencies island wide to learn from the in-depth knowledge and advice of international MICE experts regarding how to win bids. Attendees included Yau-Jr Liu, Taichung City Government’s Director-General of the Economic Development Bureau; Hon-Yueh Chen, President of the World Trade Center Taichung; Emma Weng, Managing Director of Bosstar Int’l Co., Ltd.; and central Taiwan MICE practitioners. Officials from Taichung City Government also attended the workshop to interact and learn from ICCA lectures, which fully demonstrates how the Taiwan Government values the MICE industry.
