2017 NTIA Winners Revealed

The Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) today, Saturday 22 July, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the National Travel Industry Awards.

Held at the spectacular new venue, the International Convention Centre, Sydney the 2017 NTIA also marked a significant and proud milestone in the history of the organisation – 60 years of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents.

Gala dinner guests were warmly welcomed by Arrivals Sponsor Greece National Tourism Organisation before entering the grandeur and elegance of the Ballroom – a venue truly worthy of the travel industry’s night of nights.

Guests were welcomed by AFTA Chief Executive Jayson Westbury who recognised the 2017 NTIA Sponsors and paid homage to the 12 exceedingly qualified individuals on the Judging Panel and AFTA Life Member Ian McMahon. Major Sponsor Qantas also welcome guests as Andrew David, CEO Qantas Domestic provided an opening address.

Multi-awarding winning journalist and TV personality Anjali Rao, Emcee Sponsor Dubai Tourism, led the proceedings with elegance and grandeur. Individuals and businesses across 38 award categories were recognised for their contribution to the evening.

2017 winners included; Helloworld Limited who was awarded Best Travel Agency Group. Magellan Travel Group won Best Non-Branded Travel Agency Group and Kingscote Travel SA/NT was heralded Australia’s Favourite travel agency after receiving the most consumer votes in the People’s Choice: ATAS Retail Travel Agency of the Year Campaign.  Topdeck Travel, a Flight Centre Travel Group Company Brand, took out the competitive category of Best Tour Operator – International. APT won Best River Cruise Operator for yet another year along with popular favourite Royal Caribbean International who won both Best Cruise Operator Domestic Deployment and International Deployment. Elizabeth Hutchison from Air New Zealand won Best Sales Executive Industry Supplier for the second year running and this year a bright young star Stefania Lasek took out the 2017 Emirates Travel Consultant Scholarship.

Guests were entertained by ARIA Award nominee and multi-platinum selling recording artist Ricki-Lee who delivered a high energy performance thanks to Express Travel Group.

The attending airline sponsors amazed guests with lavish ticket give-aways. Major sponsor Qantas, gave 6 lucky people return flights to London to experience their new Dreamliner Service. The Star Alliance network delighted guests with return flights for two to various international destinations thanks to alliance members Air Canada, ANA, Eva Airways, South African Airways, Thai International Airlines, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Beverage Sponsor, Air New Zealand, true to their reputation did things a little differently, bringing an NTIA first – a virtual vineyard. Guests were invited to blend their own virtual wine for the chance to win one of six amazing New Zealand Wine experiences to destinations made famous for their world class wine.

Finally, in true travel industry style, guests continued celebrations into the early hours of the morning at the After Party thanks to Singapore Airlines, which was held at The Port, the hottest new harbour side venue in Sydney.
