The 9th Taiwan International Balloon Festival will continue its contribution to the long-term development of Taitung tourism, said Taitung County Magistrate Ching-Ling Yao as she expressed her gratitude to her predecessors for their devotion and efforts. She announced that the 2019 Taiwan International Balloon Festival will take off on June 29 and last for an unprecedented 45 days. There will be eight light sculpture concerts complimenting Taitung’s beautiful night sky; tourists will be able to enjoy hot air balloon rides during the day, then gaze in awe at the colorful nightscape.

Magistrate Yao mentioned that since taking office last year, upgrading the development of Taitung has been the county government’s priority, creating a city of happiness by opening up and embracing integration and innovation. Tourism is the focus of her policy and it is also the key industry in Taitung, therefore, she instructed the county government to fully integrate the county’s tourism resources and strive for consensus.

Ranked first in the Taitung annual must-do online poll, Magistrate Yao pointed out that the hot air balloon event is one of Taitung’s most popular tourist activities and attracts a lot of tourists from both home and abroad. In light of Taitung tourism development and public opinion, Magistrate Yao intends to extend the event from its original 38 days to 45. To do this, an additional 12 million in funding is required, so she made several trips to the capital to seek sponsorship from the national tourism bureau and private enterprises. Although still a long way from the new target budget, she discussed with her team and decided to maintain the same number of days as last year. The county government will readjust the existing budget to make up for the shortfall to fully support the hot air balloon event and show their determination to boost tourism with this festival.

For its 9th year, to conserve the budget, instead of focusing on increasing the number of hot air balloons, the popular Taiwan International Balloon Festival will highlight the regional characteristics of eastern Taiwan and Taitung, in addition to developing related tourism products to promote local industries, drive overall economic growth, and enhance Taitung’s competitiveness. The new highlight of the 9th Taiwan International Balloon Festival will be what is already there—the beautiful starry nightscape of Taitung County—featuring a unique natural landscape and an environment free from the influence of PM2.5 smog of the western industrial regions. Taitung’s sparkling sky is an amazing resource, an ideal escape from the hustle and tension of cities, under which tourists can experience the beauty of Taitung from day to night.

The Taitung county government hopes the number of tourists this year will surpass last year’s peak of 900,000, and that the ripple effect will contribute to the long-term development of Taitung tourism, making Taitung a must-visit place in Taiwan.
