24-hour Tube on weekends to boost night time economy

The announcement was one of a raft of improvements to the Underground public transport network which will make travelling around London easier.

From 2015, Londoners and visitors to the capital will be able to take the Tube home at any hour of the day or night on Fridays and Saturdays, supporting London’s vibrant night-time economy and boosting businesses, jobs and leisure opportunities.62997-300x169

The new ‘Night Tube’ network has been made possible because significant parts of the London Underground network have been successfully modernised.

From 2015, weekend services will run through the night on core parts of the system – initially comprised of the Piccadilly, Victoria, Central and Jubilee lines and key sections of the Northern line.

This network, which will be expanded to include other lines in subsequent years, will dovetail with existing 24-hour and Night Bus services to give passengers an extensive and integrated service throughout the night.

Julie Chappell, Director of Consumer Marketing and Digital Channels at London & Partners, the city’s promotional organisation, said: “This is fantastic news for London’s night time economy and the capital’s residents and visitors.

‘London is the world’s best big city with the best nightlife. There are 8000 restaurants, 4500 bars and clubs, 200 theatres and more live music events than any other city in the world – so those people out enjoying what the capital has to offer deserve to have a 24 hour London Underground system at the weekend.

‘With five tube lines running throughout the night everybody should be able to get home safely at a time that suits them. It doesn’t matter if you’re going out clubbing, staying in town for drinks or at a friend’s place we can all enjoy the weekend and not worry about missing the last underground train.”
