On 27th September was the grand opening for the light design exhibition “Lightopia” (http://www.design-museum.de/en/exhibitions/detailseiten/lightopia.html).

Following the recommendations from Taipei Design Center Düsseldorf GmbH, a subsidiary of Taipei Design Center, the “Lightopia” selected 3 lighting designs by Taiwanese designers to be exhibited for the first time in Vitra Design Museum:

Ripple by Poetic Lab

Ripple is a project studying the beauty of glass material. While a focus beam of light projected through a gently rotating mouth-blown glass dome, shadow and light form a breathtaking, ever-changing pattern, where the aesthetic goes beyond the material itself.

Ripple was shown in SaloneSatellite 2013, claimed winner of the design report award, and third prize of Salone Satellite Award.

Shadow Clock by Poetic Lab

Time is always closely related to light, either conceptually or experientially. It is the most intimate sense of time elapsing to see a beam of shadow gently dancing through the space. Shadow Clock is a lamp that utilizes intangible shadows to describe the philosophical concept of time, creating a simple object with poetic functionality.

LUXIFER by GIXIA Group

LUXIFER is the first time that a one-piece molded plastic bulb has been employed in a light design. It uses the dual-plastic injection molding method to take advantage of the properties of different materials, and replaces the original metal connectors with partial electroplating on the surface of the lamp. LUXIFER represents a clean break with past light bulb manufacturing methods. It greatly reduces use of parts, which lessens lamp weight and simplifies the production process. It is a low-cost, environmentally-friendly, and very appealing light bulb design.

Following its presentation at the Vitra Design Museum, the exhibition will travel to other museums around the world.

The main exhibition hall for “Lightopia” is designed by Frank O. Gehry

The Vitra Design Museum numbers among the world’s leading museums of design. It is dedicated to the research and presentation of design, past and present, and examines design’s relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. In the main museum building by Frank Gehry, the museum annually mounts two major temporary exhibitions. Smaller parallel shows are presented in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery, a neighbouring exhibition space. Often developed with renowned designers, many of the museum’s exhibitions cover highly relevant contemporary themes, such as future technologies, sustainability or questions like mobility and social awareness. Others address historical aspects or protagonists.
The work of the Vitra Design Museum is based on its collection, which encompasses not only key objects of design history, but also the estates of several important figures (including Charles & Ray EamesGeorge NelsonVerner Panton and Alexander Girard). The museum library and document archive are available to researchers upon request. The museum conceives its exhibitions for touring, and they are shown at venues around the world. On the Vitra Campus, they are complemented by a diverse programme of events, guided tours and workshops.
