37th Istanbul Film Festival Meetings On The Bridge Awards Are Announced

13th edition of Meetings on the Bridge was held on 6 – 14 April 2018 within the scope of 37th Istanbul Film Festival. The projects and films that received the Meetings on the Bridge awards were announced at a reception hosted by l’Institut Français Istanbul on Friday, 13 April. 

A total of 17 film projects and 6 films in post-production with international potential by emerging talents and also acclaimed filmmakers from Turkey and the neighbouring countries Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran and Syria were presented at Meetings on the Bridge workshops this year. Directors and producers of the selected films attended more than 205 meetings with 95 international cinema professionals from Europe and the rest of the world and took the first steps for future collaborations.

Film Development Workshop jury members Vincenzo Bugno (Berlinale / World Cinema Fund), Rickard Olsson (Picture Tree International), Zsuzsanna Kiraly (Komplizen Film), Teresa Hoefert de Turegano (Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg) and Giovanni Robbiano (MFI) decided on the award winning teams after the project presentations.

Reception ceremony started with the speeches delivered by Istanbul Film Festival Director Kerem Ayan and Meetings on the Bridge Director Gülin Üstün. 

Film Development Workshop and Neighbours platform projects received the awards

The director Ali Kemal Çınar, the producer Sinan Yusufoğlu and the co-producer Nesra Gürbüz of the project Normal received the Meetings on the Bridge Award of 30.000 TL from Gülin Üstün.

The Film Development Workshop and the Neighbours Platform projects were all eligible for the 8000 Euro CNC Award. The award was presented to Gürcan Keltek the director and Arda Çiltepe, the producer of the project Yeni Şafak Solarken / New Dawn Fades by Christophe Pécot, Regional Audiovisual Attaché for the French Embassy in Turkey.

Melodika Sound Award was presented to Emre Erdoğdu, the director and Zeynep Koray and Emine İzmir, the producers of the project Beni Sevenler Listesi / The List of Those Who Love Me by Didem Oğuz, Taylan Oğuz, the co-founders of Melodika .

The producer Selman Nacar and the director Burak Çevik of the project Bir Gün ya da Günün Bir Parçası / A Day Or Part Of A Day received the GeniusPark Special Effects Award from Sema Duran, the VFX Executive Producer in GeniusPark.

The Mediterranean Film Institute (MFI) Script and Development Workshop Award was presented to the producer Adam Isenberg for their project My Brother’s Army. 

The Transilvania Pitch Stop Award was given to Engin Palabıyık the producer and Berrak Çolak, the director of the project Paşa Gönlüm İstedi Kayboldum / Everything In Its Right Place.

Postbıyık Sound Production Award which was delivered for the first time this year at Meetings on the Bridge was received by the director Rati Tsiteladze and producer Nino Varsimashvili of project The Empty House.

Work in Progress Awards

6 films from Turkey were presented at the Work in Progress workshop aiming to support feature films and documentaries in their post-production stage.

The Work in Progress jury members Kerri Craddock ((Toronto International Film Festival), Meinhof Zurhorst (ZDF) and Ioanna Stais (Heretic Outreach) has decided on the award winning films after watching the films at the private screenings and  the meetings held with the filmmakers.

The award winning films at Work in Progress workshop are:

Color Up Award that covers the expenses of online editing and colour grading and Daire Creative Key Art Design Award is presented to the director Ali Vatansever and producer Selin Tezcan Vatansever of the film Saf by Cenk Erol, the founder of Color Up and Arda Aktaş and Eren Erdem, the co-founders of Daire Creative.

The Başka Sinema Award was presented to director Osman Doğan and producers Sinan Sertel and Turgay Şahin of the film Güvercin Hırsızları / The Pigeon Thieves by Azize Tan, the director of Başka Sinema. 

Paz Digital Communication Awards was presented to the director Ramin Matin and the producer Emine Yıldırım of the film Son Çıkış / Siren’s Call by the founder of Paz Film Agency İmre Tezel. 

Cinema Talks and Screenings

This year at Meetings on the Bridge there were 9 cinema talks, 1 VR Experience Workshop, 3 screenings and 3 case studies along with Filming in France industry event organised in collaboration with the French Embassy.

The first day of Cinema Talks started with the Transformation of Series to the Digital talks. First Turkish anthological TV series 7YÜZ had a screening followed by a talk session with director Tunç Şahin, producer Cihan Aslı Filiz and BluTv Content Executive Sarp Kalfaoğlu. Second day hosted the screening of popular criminal series Şahsiyet and talk attended by script writer Hakan Günday, producer Kaan Tolga Değirmenci. Director Onur Saylak could not come to the meeting due his busy schedule but sent a video from the set where he had to work for long hours.

From The Idea To The Screen session started with the screening of Inflame, which premiered in Berlinale. Director Ceylan Özgün Özçelik explained the making of the film with the producer Armağan Lale.

Don’t Believe Your Ears hosted actor, director and editor Ayris Alptekin, Istanbul Film festival Director Kerem Ayan, Melodika co-founder Taylan Oğuz and Yalın Özgencil from Postbıyık, they shared their experiences on sound post-production with the filmmakers.

Cinema Talks continued with producers Funda Ödemiş, Selin Tezcan Vatansever and Serkan Çakarer with moderation of Emine Yıldırım on April 11 focusing on co-production journey of their films.

Documentary director and producer Carlos Hagerman, Timelooper head of production İlker Çevikkaya and producer Müge Özen held a workshop on the VR Experience and 360 degrees video making, editing and experiences.

Just like every year, Meet the Funds and the Markets and Meet the Training Programs and Festival sessions organised every year introduced the funds, markets, festivals and training programs representatives to the industry

Cia Edström from Göteborg Film Festival, Francine Raveney from Eurimages, Teresa Hoefert de Turegano from Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, Meltem Ağduk from UNFPA and director Ceylan Özgün Özçelik, director of photography Meryem Yavuz, producer Müge Özen with the moderation of Dr. Melis Behlil from Kadir Has University focused on the Woman in Cinema topic which has been in the headlines lately.

On the last day of the cinema talks, Eurimages Project Manager Francine Raveney and Turkey National Represantative Zülfikar Kürüm shared information about the application steps and process in All You Need To Know About Eurimages panel.

Documentary: Road To the Festival talk hosted established documentary directors and producers Carlos Hagerman, Niek Koppen and Hot Docs festival programmer Dorotha Lech. They delibarated on how the production process of documentary affects the festival journey.

Eytan İpeker delivered personal experiences from the editor point of view on the creative dynamics between the editor and the director in Editing: Creative Collaborations talk.

The last talk with the title Drama Series: Big Ideas Small Screen, brought together acclaimed script writers Berkun Oya and Ece Yörenç, script advisor Soni Jörgensen, TorinoFilmLab producer Eilon Ratzkovsky to share their creative processes with the moderation of Yamaç Okur from Ay Yapım.
