3rd Annual Camel Racing Festival Set to Run in Oman

February 9, 2018 Destination Global No Comments Email Email

The Third Annual Arabic Camel Race Festival is set to take place at Al Bashair Arab Camels Racetrack in Oman this month from the 11 – 15 February, 2018.  The event is open to the public and will see eighty-three races across four days culminating with the finals on the 15th of February.

Similar to horse racing, camel racing is an authentic Arab sport where camels compete at speeds of up to sixty-four kilometres an hour on specially built tracks.  Camel racing has evolved from an ancient tradition into an official and professional sport.

This racing event is the first of the year and is supported by the government as a continuation to protect the Omani ancient heritage, history and environment and the Sultanate ensures a coordinated participation of all 11 Wilayats or regions.

Camels have played a vital role in the region over thousands of years and besides being a means of travel, food and shelter, camels are also used for entertaining, celebrating and competing in festivals and special events.

Camel racing is an ancient tradition that is being embraced in modern day in a way that not only increases economic benefit for the Sultanate but also offers the opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture and heritage.
