41 SUD, Ambassador for New Caledonia in the 2013 Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race

Jean Luc Esplaas and his New Caledonian crew will take part in the « Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race » again this year.

The crew of 41 SUD has already participated several times in this famous offshore blue water classic, including a third place in their category in 1998, the worst year in terms of dangerous conditions and loss of lives since the inauguration of the race.

On 26 December each year, participating yachts in the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race gather in Sydney Bay for a departure in the direction of Tasmania via Storm Bay and the Derwent River, amidst the roaring forties, and over a distance of 630 nautical miles.

The Bass Strait, which separates the Australian mainland from Tasmania, and the South Pacific ocean directly to the east, have a reputation of producing very difficult wind and sea conditions and as the race takes place during the southern hemisphere summer, it is not unusual to see yachts abandon the race.

But that’s not all: 41 Sud also crossed the line in second place during the Noumea Sail 2012 race. As the only New Caledonian boat to take part in the regatta, 41 Sud arrived in second place in a race particularly hampered by extremely difficult navigational conditions.

41 Sud is a 12 metre Archambault 40, designed for regattas and races with difficult navigational conditions. Its 9/10 tapered mast is very balanced, with rigid sails and handles both fair weather and strong winds with ease. 41 Sud is also equipped with a carbon tiller and telescopic stick for dispatch of large sails.
