5-Course Cabana Poon Choi: An Intimate and Indulgent Chinese New Year Celebration at Banyan Tree Macau

January 22, 2018 Dining No Comments Email Email

It’s no secret that the Chinese New Year period is one of the busiest – and most stressful – times to travel. A quick ferry ride to neighboring Macau, though, is the perfect getaway from the busy streets of Hong Kong, with regular ferries between the cities meaning no long airport queues.

Celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dog in luxurious style in the intimate surrounds of Banyan Tree Macau. This year, the Michelin Luxury Hotel is offering an elevated take on the traditional poon choi, with fine ingredients and an exclusive, secluded setting. The five-course Cabana Big Bowl Feast allows diners to indulge in internationally sourced ingredients in a private poolside Cabana, the perfect setting for an intimate gathering. Set on the largest resort deck in the world, each luxuriously appointed Cabana house features cushioned lounges, marble-top tables and retractable curtains, as well as private shower rooms, a flat-screen TV and complimentary Wi-Fi – the comforts of home in a resort setting.

The Chinese New Year feast begins with a special sashimi platter featuring fresh salmon and crab willow, and some delicate snacks including purple turnip, crisp taro and more. Diners are encouraged to toss all the ingredients in the pot before eating which is a tradition called Lo Hei originated from the South East Asian Chinese community. The belief is that ‘the higher you toss the ingredients, the more abundance you gain the upcoming year. Next, warm up with an individual serve of a heartwarming double boiled chicken soup with mushroom and sea cucumber. The show-stopping poon choi is a five-layered masterpiece, and features premium versions of traditional ingredients such as Japanese dried oyster, South African abalone, and matsutake from Brazil, as well as other selections including fish maw and goose feet to signify a prosperous year ahead. The all-important broth is lovingly prepared, a six-hour simmer infused with fresh pork, bacon and chicken. The poon choi is followed by a generous serve of seafood fried rice with French black truffle, and a selection of desserts and fresh fruit, the perfect way to end a family festive feast.

Available from 15 to 20 February, the Cabana Big Bowl Feast at Banyan Tree Macau is priced at MOP2,888* (ideal for 6 persons), free-flow soft drinks, beer and house wine for an additional MOP100 per person.
