Since its formation in 1975, Contours Travel has supported community initiatives across Latin America. Through a partnership between Rotary clubs in Melbourne and Cuzco in Peru, a unique ‘Agua Pura’ (pure water) program has been developed in which Contours travellers on the ‘Treasures of South America’ tour are given a portable water purifier so they can deliver it personally and help install it in remote hamlets in the Peruvian Andes.
Contours Travel’s 27-day ‘Treasures of South America’ tour departs Australia on October 14, 2016, and explores Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Brazil and Argentina with the itinerary starting in Lima and ending in Buenos Aires.
Highlights include boat and canoe rides on the Amazon in Peru, with a stay in a jungle eco-lodge, a swim with pink river dolphins in the Amazon, a private weaving demonstration in Peru‘s Sacred Valley, two days to discover Machu Picchu’s ancient wonders at a more relaxed pace and a vist to the ceramics workshop of famous Andean artist Pablo Seminario. Also in the comprehensive itinerary is a ride on the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer train to the famed floating islands of Lake Titicaca in Peru where Uros Indians still live as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago.
Two months after the Olympic Games, guests will also visit Rio’s iconic drawcards and spectacular Iguazu Falls, sample Chile’s legendary wine at a winery near Santiago and join a private tango lesson in Buenos Aires before watching the professionals dance at a dinner show. Optional extensions to the Galapagos Islands and Patagonia are also available.
Meanwhile, Contours Travel’s 20-day ‘Treasures of Mexico’ guided tour, departing Australia October 1, 2016, begins in Mexico City and ends in Cancun, taking in the famous Teotihuacan Pyramids, a cooking lesson in the colourful city of Oaxaca, a boat ride through the 1km-deep Sumidero Canyon and visits to indigenous villages near San Cristobal, the Mayan step pyramids of Chichen Itza and the Caribbean beaches of Playa del Carmen at journey’s end. A 12-day extension to Cuba at the end of the tour is also available including vintage car rides through Old Havana, a visit to Ernest Hemingway’s favourite bars, traditional meals in private homes and visits to Cuba’s renowned tobacco plantations and cigar factories.
