Members of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) were invited to present their donations to the honourable Prime Minister last Thursday, March 17th at his office in Suva. Preston Miskelly, General Manager of Holiday Inn Suva was present to represent the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa in presenting the cheque to Fiji’s Prime Minister, Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama.
The monies collected were a result of donations from guests and staff at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. Many of the resorts international and local guests enquired about making donations and offering assistance. As a result, the Resort set up a fund raising campaign webpage for those wishing to make financial donations. The resort staff also pulled together to help their fellow Fijians in a ‘saqamoli’ drive and this amount was also matched by the Resort. Additional donations came from the Resorts Disaster relief partner CARE.
In response to the crisis InterContinental Hotel Group’s (IHG®), recently activated their global charity programme, Shelter in a Storm, to assist staff affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston. IHG® Shelter in a Storm; based in London, helps hotels support guests, colleagues and local communities in times of need. A key element of IHG’s disaster response is the IHG® Shelter Fund, built up continuously through fundraising activities in the hotels and corporate offices throughout the year and enables quick action as soon as disaster strikes to provide vital assistance. As a result of the continued global support from all IHG® properties, the Fund was able to respond very quickly and organise cyclone relief packs for all 710 staff between InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa and Holiday Inn Suva.
“We are proud to be contributing to the rebuilding of Fiji in such a time of need and it’s wonderful to not only have contributions from our own team members pockets, for those less fortunate but also for our Corporate office and the two IHG properties who have supported the local community and Fiji at large over the years. The Resort has also been fortunate to be able to pull together quickly to ensure that our guests are looked after, it’s Bula as usual and we are working towards maintaining services to keep visitors coming to Fiji,” says Area General Manger – South Pacific, Andrew Davidson.
