Straight to the top, step by step – to the highest pinnacle in hospitality at the tender age of 33! An achievement that elicited the following exceptionally generous compliment from the jury at business journal Bilanz: “Congratulations! In our magazine’s ratings this year, your colleague Amanda Bulgin Wassmer was awarded the title ‘Sommelière of the Year 2017’.”

When advising guests on wines which she feels go well with this or that choice of dish, Amanda Bulgin Wassmer evidences a singular linguistic charm. She makes recommendations, but never dictates to anyone. Her delightful blend of Swiss German and Oxford English alone is enough to captivate most guests. Talking to her, one immediately senses the depth of knowledge behind what she says. What distinguishes a good sommelière is not just a finely tuned set of taste buds, but also a time-consuming academic training background.

Bulgin Wassmer is currently completing the second year of her “Master of Wine” course, one of the most highly regarded vinological qualifications there is. Only 80 people in the world passed the grueling entrance examination, and Amanda is the only sommelière working in Switzerland who passed the test. She has already earned a diploma from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET).

A brief résumé of the most important national and international milestones along Wiltshire, UK-born Amanda Bulgin Wassmer’s route to the very summit of international hospitality outlines the blueprint by which she has honed her skills and qualifications: The story began in January 2003. And within a decade, in January 2013, she was already Head Sommelière & Restaurant Manager at the Parkhotel Vitznau on Lake Lucerne. In this position, she was responsible for wine cellar stocks worth something in the region of 25 million Swiss francs. She organized events and dinners covering every aspect of wines of the world, and was also charged with training the team around her.

At the famous Decanter magazine, Amanda Bulgin Wassmer served as Tasting Executive from 2012 to 2013, organizing the European chapter of the Decanter World Wine Awards – the biggest degustation event in the world covering more than 14,000 wines. Alongside these duties, she somehow found time to edit and correct specialist articles, pen wine recommendations and work as a specialist author and columnist, giving readers recommendations on wines for both consumption and investment purposes.

At London’s world-famous Harrods department store, she served as an advisor on the Fine and Rare Wines and Spirits team, supporting clients who invested in the red gold. Swiss stars and copious GaultMillau point scores have repeatedly formed the backdrop to her stunning capabilities: She has been employed as sommelière at the three-star Schauenstein restaurant in Fürstenau and at the Hotel Restaurant Rigiblick in Zurich. Each successive assignment gave Amanda Bulgin Wassmer the chance to further train and develop her palate – not only for wines, but also for cheeses, cigars and other delights.

Bulgin Wassmer is proud of the award presented to her by Bilanz. Hans-Rudolf Rütti, General Manager of 7132 Hotel, sees the accolade as further confirmation of the credo to which hotel owner Remo Stoffel subscribes: “In the long run, Swiss hoteliery and gastronomy can only defend their leading position if they continuously improve their quality.”

The newly crowned prize winner is married to Sven Wassmer (two Michelin stars and 17 GaultMillau points), himself the shooting star of the national and international restaurant scene. For about the past two years, the couple have worked together with 7132 Hotel in Vals, Grisons, Switzerland.
