Why Travel Insurance Can Help Keep Aussies Covered On Long Weekends Away

The upcoming Queen’s Birthday long weekend is fast approaching and many families around the country are packing their bags in preparation for a domestic departure.

Australia has an average of 13 public holidays annually across the states, so it’s easy for the average family to turn a long weekend into a mini break. Last year alone, over 179,950[1] Aussies chose to take a mini holiday within Australia.

With this in mind, online travel insurance provider InsureandGo is reminding Australians that domestic travel insurance is available and can help provide cover for common travel hiccups such as last minute cancellations due to unforseen events, lost baggage and car rental excess in the event something goes wrong*.

Mr Jonathan Etkind, Commercial Manager of InsureandGo said: “Australians often don’t realise that you can take out a domestic travel insurance policy. A family of four can be covered for less than $15 per person[2] in total for a weekend escape and have the confidence they are covered if flights are delayed or if baggage goes missing.”

“One of the benefits of a domestic policy is that car rental excess can be covered under the same policy, which can cover excess payable in case the policy holder has an incident in a rental car. Many travellers hiring a rental purchase an excess waiver from the rental car company, which is a daily fee on top of the daily car rental fee itself, for most a domestic policy works out to be more cost effective. In saying this, we always advise customers to check the Product Disclosure Statement of their provider to understand what they are covered for,” said Mr Etkind.

InsureandGo’s domestic travel insurance policy includes comprehensive cover for the whole family with children included under the same policy at no extra charge. InsureandGo also provides free personal accident and personal liability cover for over 40 sports and activities including bungee jumping and water skiing.

For those that have yet to book a local getaway, Mr Etkind provides his favourite Australian long weekend destinations and activities:

  • Jamala Wildlife Lodge, ACT – Perfect for couples and families who are searching for a mix of luxury and adventure. Whilst staying here you will have the opportunity to mingle with some of the world’s most dangerous and endangered animals such as lions, giraffes, and leopards.
  • Cairns, QLD – For those looking to escape the cold of June, Cairns provides a warm getaway with fun adventure and water sports and the incredible Great Barrier Reef. For some added adventure to your stay, a visit to the Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Adventure is a must – it’s the world’s first challenge ropes and zip line course in a wildlife park. If you’re brave you can zip line right over their resident Crocodile Goliath.
  • Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island, SA – Get up close and personal with the Sea Lion which is an endangered specie with only 14,700 unique to South Australia and Western Australia. Walking along the pristine beach of Adelaide, travellers will also be treated to one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia.
