A Curated Indigenous Australian Art Itinerary with Coral Expeditions

March 28, 2017 Cruise No Comments Email Email

Coral Expeditions has just announced the launch of a specially curated Australian art expedition through, through Cape York and Arnhem Land led by renowned Indigenous artist Brian Robinson. The 12-night voyage offers guests a unique opportunity to experience Indigenous Australia, visit sacred rock art, explore some of the country’s most awarded Indigenous art centres,  meet local artists, and a series of on-board Artists Workshops.

Staffed entirely by Australian and New Zealand residents, the expedition is curated and led by renowned Torres Strait artist, and Cairns local, Brian Robinson, and supported by Arnhem Land expert, Ian Morris, to ensure an immersive and in-depth exploration of the connection between art, culture and nature.  Departing from Cairns, guests will sail from Cairns through the Great Barrier Reef to Australia’s most northern point, Cape York.  From there, guests will sail to the Northern Territory, immersing themselves in the pre-historic landscapes of Australia’s northern coastline through to the remote Arnhem Land coast, before finishing the voyage in Darwin.

Indigenous artist and expedition leader Brian Robinson spent his childhood on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait and is now the founding artist of ‘triebSTUDIO’ and a renowned specialist in indigenous visual art and design – with many of his creations collected internationally.

Brian remarks on the forces that shaped him artistically “Growing up on Thursday Island was paradise for the imagination, it provided a unique physical and spiritual playground for my artistic style to develop. Influenced by my cultural heritage and contemporary artists, my passion lies in creating hybrid works which infuse indigenous culture with global ideologies, and intertwine the meta-physical with the natural world. I am passionate about sharing my indigenous heritage through my own art as well as taking travellers on a spiritual journey through the unique art in this amazing corner of Australia.”

Brian will conduct a number of bespoke onboard art workshops, where all attendees can create their own pieces.

Arnhem Land expert Ian Morris has worked with the Aboriginal traditional owners of Arnhem Land region for decades and speaks Djambarrpuynu, Warramirri & Gupapuynu – all local Indigenous languages. Onboard, Ian will hold presentations and lectures about the history and style of traditional artwork.

Among the highlights of the curated art tour, guests will:

  • Learn carving, weaving, printmaking and linocutting from a traditional artist
  • Engage with local children at Gawa School at a kids art workshop led by Brian Robinson
  • Visit Ngaruwanajirri Art Centers on Bathurst Island, and watch how the resident lesser-abled artists fine tune their skills
  • Take part in presentations covering the art & culture of Arnhem Land

  • See ancient rock art of the early European navigators at Wessell Island
  • Enjoy a traditional dance performance at Badu Art Center, Torres Strait
