egtmedia59Speaking at AIME this morning as part of the Business Events Week media conference panel, Professor Paul Zimmet, AO: Director Emeritus, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute; Adjunct Professor, Monash University;

Honorary President of the International Diabetes Federation; Programme Chair World Diabetes Congress; and Club Melbourne Ambassador; took great delight in telling delegates that the World Diabetes Conference held in 2013, actually filled the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre for the first time since its inception.

With 10305 delegates, plus over 3000 partners who did not actually attend the event; from 140 countries, listening to 405 speakers from 51 countries, speaking about seven different streams of scientific research it is no wonder the exhibition halls were filled to the brim and that meetings and events overlapped to places such as Geelong, Lorne and even the MCG.

Professor Zimmet put Diabetes and Diabetes research into true perspective when told the audience that if Diabetes was a country it would be the third biggest on earth behind only China and India with a population currently in excess of 400 Million people and that within a few years that would rise to over half a billion.

The World Diabetes Conference injected over $63 Million into the Victorian economy and was by far the biggest ever in Australia.  It will however very shortly be outstripped by the World HIV – AIDS Conference, also at the MCEC later this year with an anticipated 14000+ delegates expected.

Melbourne Convention Bureau CEO Karen Bolinger pointed out that once the World HIV AIDS Conference concludes, Melbourne will have been host to the four biggest medical conferences in the world, and that all of that will have taken place in one year.  A remarkable feat and one unlikely to be emulated by any other city, anywhere in the world in the foreseeable future.
