Cultural tour specialist Peter Sommer Travels is about to embark on a culinary adventure in Sicily, sampling the island’s superb restaurants, fine local produce and seductive lifestyle in an eight-day small-group tour.
Departing September 24, 2016, the Gastronomic Tour of Sicily provides a complete immersion in the island’s rich culinary tradition while at the same time exploring its remarkable ancient history and magnificent scenery.
Catering to no more than 10 guests, the tour is escorted by experts in Sicilian food, culture and history. It begins on the islet of Ortygia in the World Heritage-listed port city of Syracuse, where a visit to the bustling local markets and a hands-on cooking class provide an introduction to what lies ahead.
Over the following days guests will be able to enjoy tastings, meals and demonstrations across Sicily’s east, including at an olive farm, a local winery, a herb farm and several colourful local restaurants.
Between culinary adventures, guests will be able to explore some of Sicily’s extraordinary ancient sites including one of the world’s largest arrays of Roman mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale, the fascinating rock-cut tombs of the Pantalica Valley, and the famous Greek theatre and ruins of the Syracuse Archaeological Park.
The tour also includes a guided walk among the woodlands, lava fields and craters of Mount Etna, led by an expert volcanologist.
The Gastronomic Tour of Sicily operates from September 24 to October 1, 2016, and is priced from £2945 (approx A$5810) per person twin share, including all breakfasts, six lunches, three dinners, all accommodation, all activities and excursions with expert guides, cooking class and demonstrations, ground transport and airport transfers.
