Carnival Australia senior port agent Chris Ponting was only a teenager when he began his 52-year career in shipping and travel as a clerk with P&O back in 1962.

Years on aged 70, Chris is as enthusiastic about passenger shipping now as he was all those years ago as a junior shipping clerk.

These days, Chris is one of Carnival Australia’s ‘go to team’ – the port agents who devote their every waking hour to supporting ships while in port across a seemingly endless list of matters. “We look after a ship’s husbandry while it is in port,” is the way Chris describes the port agent role. “This can include requirements to do with Customs, Immigration, stevedores, quarantine and security. We are there to support the ship while it is in port.”

During his career, Chris has also spent two extended periods at sea first as an assistant purser onboard Aramac with E&A Line, then a subsidiary of P&O. With Chris onboard, Aramac sailed on regular runs from Australia to the Far East. Years later, Christ returned to sea, this time as purser on E&A Line container ships that carried up to 12 passengers at a time to the Far East and the Mediterranean. And in between those two spells at sea, Chris was a travel agent helping hundreds of people with their travel plans plus stints with East West Airlines and Ansett.

Chris has been in his current port agent role for the past 11 years and is still enjoying being one of the ‘go to team’ who make a ship call as trouble free as possible. “It doesn’t mean we do everything, but if something is needed we usually know who to go to get things done,” Chris said.
