A New Futuristic Architectural Wonder Opens In Seoul

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) which opens in Seoul on Friday, 21 March, 2014  is set to create renewed worldwide interest in Seoul city. 

The futuristic 95,000 square metre structure will be the largest three dimensional atypical landmark building in the world.  It is expected to become a global landmark and attraction for tourists as well as an urban oasis for citizens.

Designed by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the DDP will operate 24/7 and consists of five spaces – an Art Hall, Museum, Design Lab, Design Market and the Dongdaemum History & Culture Park.

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is in the Dongdaemun commercial district of Seoul where visitors can shop and eat day and night, and now also visit the DDP late into the night and early hours of the morning to enjoy art and design exhibitions and much more.

920 works will be displayed at the eight opening exhibitions with the 14th Seoul Fashion Week also being one of the first opening events to greet visitors to the DDP.

The museum (7,928m square metres) is where the Korean design prototype meets global trends.  It will also display the permanent exhibition of the Gangson Arts Collection which gives visitors a great insight into Korean culture. Fifty nine art pieces which are designated as national treasures will be exhibited.

Five special opening exhibitons are scheduled to be held at the Museum and the overall theme for the special exhibition is ‘How design can make a difference in the world’.

The Art Hall (4,953 square metres) is the place where creative ideas meet business.  Various conventions, fashion shows, concerts, performance, product launch events will be held at the Art Hall.

The Design Lab is a business platform for private businesses where creative works and products are displayed, promoted and traded.  It consist of Biz Streets, Trend Lab, Designer’s Lounge and an Education Space.  The Design Market, open 24/7 is a convenient complex that connects cultural contents, experience and shopping in the one place.

The Dongdaemun History and Culture Park (4,110 square metres) has been open since October, 2009 as a place for Seoul residents and visitors to enjoy culture and relaxation in the city.

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza is expected to become a major MICE venue, hosting regular annual international conferences, global fashion and design events in Seoul.

The price of programs or facility use of the DDP depends on the exhibitions and events, but admission fees are generally expected to cost around 8,000 won (approx. A$8).
