egtmedia59International aviation capacity to Australia is growing strongly and domestic Australian aviation is growing alongside it.

That’s a snapshot of Australia’s aviation scene based on a monthly newsletter reporting on latest route developments as well as updates on alliances, code shares, consolidation, pricing, new carriers, aircraft orders, airports and air service agreements. 250x250TICBanner

Sourced from CAPA – Centre for Aviation and issued by Tourism Australia, the report waits till all data is in, so the newest one relates to May 2013.

That month saw strong growth in international capacity to Australia, up 8.5% for the month, following robust growth in April 2013 (up 7.7%).

Capacity from Singapore, United Arab Emirates and New Zealand continued to boost the overall result.

Capacity from China and the USA also grew (but off lower bases), while capacity from Indonesia and Hong Kong continued to contract. Average load factors increased 1.1% to 68% in May 2013.

Domestic capacity growth within Australia increased 5.6% in May 2013 with overall growth in year ended May 2013 increasing 7.9%. The report expects capacity growth to slow during the second half of 2013 to between 2 and 3%.

Average load factors weakened slightly during May 2013 (down 2.4%), April 2013 (minus 1.6%) and March 2013 (minus 0.9%). While capacity growth continues to be focussed on high yielding traffic routes such as mining (such as Newman-Perth, Brisbane-Gladstone), higher leisure-based routes continue to report strong growth during May 2013 (for instance Melbourne- Sunshine Coast, Ballina-Sydney, Coffs Harbour-Sydney).
