Colleagues across InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG®) from all over the world participated in IHG Race Around the World, an annual event that aims to raise awareness and funds for the global hotel group’s disaster relief programme, IHG® Shelter in a Storm.
Since it was established four years ago, IHG has raised more than US $3.8m across 24 countries for the IHG® Shelter Fund, which has been activated 57 times to date. The fund is built up through fundraising activities in IHG hotels and corporate offices throughout the year. This enables IHG to provide vital assistance to the local community immediately after a disaster.
The annual IHG Race Around the World event comprises country-specific activities which colleagues from IHG hotels and corporate offices participate in. This ranges from the annual Stair Climb challenge at Holiday Inn Sydney to “Walk to Work” initiatives at the corporate office; for every activity a colleague completes as part of the race, IHG makes a donation into the IHG Shelter Fund on their behalf.
In March 2015, the South-Pacific island of Vanuatu was struck by Cyclone Pam, leaving a devastating path of destruction in its wake. IHG activated US $60,000 from the IHG® Shelter Fund to support the impacted community. In addition, a further US $60,000 was provided to support IHG colleagues at the Holiday Inn Resort® Vanuatu as they continued to rebuild their lives in the aftermath.
Karin Sheppard, IHG Chief Operating Officer, Australasia, Japan and Korea, and Franchising, Asia, Middle East and Africa commented, “IHG Shelter in a Storm builds on our long and proud history of helping local communities in times of need. It aims to ensure we provide a more consistent response in our hotels and corporate offices, using our global partnership with CARE to draw on their expertise in disaster preparedness and relief, guiding our hotels on how to respond. This is our fifth IHG Race Around the World event and was not only great fun; it also motivated and engaged our people, and raised money for a fantastic cause”.
Across Australia, IHG currently has a total of 25 hotels open across three brands: InterContinental®, Crowne Plaza® and Holiday Inn® with a further 6 hotels in the pipeline, due to open over the next three to five years. This includes the launch of the Holiday Inn Express® brand next year.
