A to A Safaris: Making Conservation a Key Focus

For Hong Kongers, an African safari is a “journey of a lifetime” offering glimpses of iconic animals, endless migrating herds, and spectacular wilderness areas.

For A to A Safaris, the first safari specialist to recognise the quest among Asians for luxury adventures in Africa’s wild places, a safari is also an opportunity to further the cause of ecotourism and protect the wilderness and wildlife that sets the continent apart.

“Since introducing African safaris to Asia in 2002, we have made conservation a key focus by partnering with like-minded safari camps, lodges and guides that are committed to sustainable tourism, local community involvement and wildlife conservation,” says Kim Nixon – Managing Director Asia, A to A Safaris.

The safari specialist’s efforts go far beyond Africa’s shores, with A to A Safaris investing heavily in educating the market on the value of conservation. For instance, A to A Safaris spearheaded the Asian launch of the book:Africa’s Finest (together with co-author Colin Bell). This book is a ground-breaking resource which celebrates the continent’s most sustainable and responsible safari camps and lodges.

A to A Safaris hosts annual road shows across Asia featuring experts on ecotourism, alternative energy, endangered species and anti-poaching efforts. The team is able to educate Asian travellers on the elephant ivory and rhino horn industry, and importance of these two keystone species to the overall eco-system in Africa and the wilderness areas they so long to explore. The list of conservation leaders the company has hosted over the years and will host in coming months is impressive:

  • Keith Vincent, the current CEO of Wilderness Safaris, who has joined several Asian road shows to discuss topics related to conservation and sustainable tourism
  • Andy Payne, then CEO of Wilderness Safaris, now head of Thornybush Game Reserve of South Africa, who spoke on sustainable tourism trends
  • Richard Knocker, Head Guide of Nomad Tanzania, who expressed his passion for preserving the Serengeti eco-system so the greatest mammal migration on the planet can be enjoyed by future generations
  • Russell Binks, General Manager of Tswalu Kalahari, who spoke of billionaire Nicky Oppenheimer’s massive conservation project in the Kalahari
  • Jackson Looseiya, BBC Big Cat Diary co-host, and arguably the most well-known Maasai tribesman in the western world, who focused on Maasai-lion conflict resolution in Kenya
  • Peter Allison, New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed safari guide for Wilderness Safaris, who spoke on the Evolution of the Safari
  • Stefano Cheli, Founder and CEO of Cheli & Peacock, who was instrumental in the creation of wildlife conservancies in the greater Maasai Mara in Kenya
  • A to A Safaris continues to work with partners that not only deliver quality safari offerings, but are also committed to sustainable tourism, local community involvement, and the preservation of Africa’s remaining wilderness areas. Among organisations A to A Safaris is proud to support:
  • Children in the Wilderness, arguably Wilderness Safaris’ most successful community development program, which facilitates sustainable conservation through leadership development and education of rural children in Africa.
  • Uthando, raising funds and other forms of assistance for township community development projects in Cape Town, South Africa.
  • The Kusasa Project, stimulating minds and aspirations to encourage underprivileged children in Franschhoek in South Africa’s Cape Winelands by facilitating the development of academic, sporting and life skills.
  • The canine project of one of Africa’s pioneering game reserves, Singita, which utilizes highly trained dogs to assist anti-poaching units to protect rhinos in South Africa.
