Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade association for the leading U.S. airlines, together with the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), today announced that more than 10 million crewmembers have used the Known Crewmember® (KCM) program since its launch in July 2011, enhancing security and reducing security lines for passengers. KCM enables Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers to expedite flight-crew access to secure areas of airports with positive verification of identity and employment status, enabling crew to get to aircraft more quickly and making security lines more efficient for the traveling public.

The KCM program has expanded from U.S. pilots to flight attendants and is currently located at 31 major U.S. airports with 121 domestic airlines participating in the program. A4A and ALPA anticipate KCM will reach 12 million crewmember screenings annually as the program expands to additional U.S. airports and airlines.

“We commend the KCM program and the TSA for reaching a remarkable 10 million crewmember screenings, which alleviates line congestion and enhances the flying experience,” said A4A Senior Vice President, Safety, Security and Operations Dan Elwell. “Continuing to further a risk-based approach to security, including KCM, enables TSA to focus its resources on greater threats, while enhancing safety and security and making travel more efficient.”

“ALPA is proud to be a partner in the KCM program that empowers pilots and crewmembers to quickly go through security at major airports across the country,” said Capt. Lee Moak, ALPA president. “KCM has allowed TSA to refocus security resources, increase efficiency in security screenings, and significantly reduced the wait time in security lines for both pilots and the traveling public. As this program continues to expand, we look forward to even more time and cost savings as the industry moves more towards risk-based security.”
