Whether travelling through Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, India or beyond, there’s sure to be a luxury train journey to suit you. Here are A&K’s top 10 rail journeys across the Globe.

Northern Belle goes to the Tattoo
Military enthusiasts will relish this unique package travelling on board the Northern Belle from London on a weekend trip north to Scotland. Arrive in style and spend an evening among the ceremonial splendour and pageantry of the British Armed Forces at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which is held in one of the country’s most awe-inspiring locations, Edinburgh Castle. Transport is on the luxurious Northern Belle, which evokes the opulent “Belle” trains of the 1930s where guests travel in individually designed carriages fashioned by marquetry experts, muralists and mosaic artists. Accommodation in Edinburgh is at the Caledonian Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

A&K’s 3-day Edinburgh Military Tattoo package is priced from $1,420 per person.

E&OE
Go back in time to the golden age of rail travel and take a journey on the Eastern & Oriental Express. This stylish train oozes colonial style and comfort, with rattan chairs, freshly pressed linen, antique brass fittings, air-conditioned compartments and delicious East meets West cuisine. The train travels on different journeys through the mystical landscapes of Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Laos with plenty of time to soak up the scenery and explore on guided excursions.

A&K’s 3-day Classic Journey from Singapore to Bangkok is priced from $2,860 per person.

The Royal Scotsman
The sophisticated and elegant Royal Scotsman, from the Orient-Express stable, offers up a unique experience for just 36 guests. The journey is a nostalgic reminder of the Edwardian age of romance and takes in some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery: misty moors and glens, lochs and highland castles. State cabins all have private facilities and steward service and although there is plenty of time to relax on board, there are also interesting visits and activities included. A highlight is afternoon tea at Ballindalloch Castle, home of the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546. Itineraries of up to seven nights are available with departures April to October.

A&K’s 3-day Highland Journey is priced from $3,470 per person. Single guests pay no extra for single cabins.

VSOE
The legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is probably the most iconic rail journey of all. Best known for the London, Paris and Venice route, the train also visits Rome, Innsbruck, Prague, Istanbul, Budapest and Dresden. Included in the experience is a personal steward, who attends to all guest needs. Accommodation is in private compartments gleaming with timber marquetry and polished brass with soft towels and crisp linen. Meals on board are unforgettable and only the finest French silverware and crystal makes each meal one to remember.

A&K’s 2-day London to Venice journey is priced from $3,080 per person. Single guests pay no extra for single cabins.

Rovos Rail
Train buffs can happily combine a trip by rail with a safari in Africa on board Rovos Rail. The two beautifully rebuilt Classic trains each carry a maximum of 72 passengers. Suites on board have traditional furnishings and period décor and itineraries operate between Cape Town and Pretoria, Victoria Falls, Durban, George and Dar Es Salaam. There’s also an epic 28-day journey from Cape Town to Cairo, which combines rail travel with an air safari.

A&K’s 3-day Pretoria to Cape Town journey is priced from $2,510 per person.

The Ghan
Here at home, the iconic Ghan, named for the pioneering Afghan cameleers who blazed a trail into the Red Centre over 150 years ago, is an unforgettable rail experience. Travelling from Adelaide north through the heart of the country to Darwin, passengers see the Australian outback at its most dramatic. Stops along the way include Alice Springs and Katherine Gorge. Guests travelling with A&K enjoy spacious cabins on board, en suite bathrooms, large picture windows, all meals and a cabin steward.

A&K’s 7-day The Overland Adventure includes a 3-day journey on The Ghan with prices from $7,613 per person.

Rail in Peru
In the Americas, Peru is home to two iconic rail journeys: the extraordinary Andean Explorer which is an all day trip from the shores of Lake Titicaca through the Andes to Cusco and the winding route from Cusco to Machu Picchu, lost city of the Incas. For a more indulgent option there’s the Hiram Bingham luxury service between Machu Picchu and Cusco with meals, refreshments and entertainment on board and convenient travel times.

A&K’s 9-day ‘Glimpse of Peru’ includes the Hiram Bingham service and is priced from $6,380 per person.

Toy train Darjeeling
In India, A&K takes travellers into the foothills of the Himalayas to the cool climate summer resort of Darjeeling, founded by the British. One of the most atmospheric ways to get there is the narrow gauge toy train, which chuffs its way past Tibetan prayer flags and local homes between Ghoom monastery and the tea plantations of Darjeeling. A&K’s 8-day ‘Himalayan Sojourn’ includes a trip on the toy train with prices from $2,815 per person.

Shinkansen Japan
Japan’s high-speed bullet trains (Shinkansen) are the best way to get around the Land of the Rising Sun. Operating at speeds of up to 320 km/h you’ll get to your destination swiftly, comfortably and on time. The network consists of multiple lines among which the route from Tokyo to Osaka is the oldest and most popular. Room for luggage is limited on board so a luggage delivery service is sometimes required.

A&K’s 10-day Japan Ancient & Modern includes a bullet train ride from Hakone to Kyoto and is priced from $14,585 per person.
