Abstract Magazine Wins Prestigious Design Award

Abstract Magazine was selected as one of the Top 5 design projects in the state at the 2013 Hawaiʻi 5-0 Design Award Show sponsored by the Hawaii Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).

Graphic artists from across the state submitted design projects in all mediums—print, web, video, multimedia—and the top 50 were awarded certificates and placement in AIGA Hawaii’s winners book and online gallery. The Top 5 also received trophies.

Abstract Magazine Editor James Charisma said placing in the Top 5 was an incredibly humbling experience given that the magazine is only a year old.

“We just wanted to participate alongside some of the state’s top designers and support the AIGA and the local design community,” he said.

Alissa Walker, who writes about design for Dwell, FAST Company and the Los Angeles Times, was one of the judges who selected Abstract for the Top 5.

“What we really like about Abstract Magazine is that it exists,” she said. “Each issue is experimental and exploratory but they still feel related.”

Also judging the submissions were Joseph Duffy, creative director and branding expert for Minneapolis-based Duffy & Partners; and Josh Kenyon, co-creator of the Portland, Ore.-based design firm Jolby & Friends.

The Hawaii 5-0 Award Show capped off AIGA’s inaugural Design Week Hawaii event, which included workshops, studio tours, and meet-and-greets.
