Accor took home two awards at the 2014 PATA Gold Awards. Organized by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), the awards recognize outstanding achievements of tourism and hospitality industry players in the region.

For the second year in a row, Accor has won the PATA Gold Award for Corporate Environmental Program for PLANET 21, the Group’s sustainable development platform. Accor also earned a PATA Gold Award for Education and Training for Building Futures, an Accor New Zealand initiative that provides training and employment opportunities to disadvantaged youth.

The award for Education & Training recognizes Building Futures, which was developed by Accor New Zealand in collaboration with the country’s Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment. Building Futures reaches out to disadvantaged people, particularly indigenous youth, to provide on-the-job training leading to a national qualification and – in many cases – paid employment. The program has helped over 300 young people find meaningful career options in the hospitality industry between 2010 and 2013.

“Finding qualified talent interested in working in hospitality is one of the biggest issues faced by Accor and other industry players, and we are continually looking for ways to expand our talent pool in the region,” said Patrick Ollivier, Accor Asia-Pacific’s Chief Human Resources Officer. “With Building Futures, our New Zealand team found an innovative way to reach out to disadvantaged members of our community to provide them with training leading to a recognized qualification and job placement. I’m proud of this initiative, as it has allowed us to make a difference in these colleagues’ lives while also supporting our own human resources needs.”

In addition, for the second year in a row, PLANET 21, Accor’s sustainable development program, has won the PATA Gold Award for Corporate Environmental Programme. With PLANET 21, Accor has made 21 commitments to act together for environmental and social responsibility. These commitments span a range of issues and have associated targets for the year 2015, including a 15% reduction in water consumption, a 10% decrease in energy use and carbon emissions and a total ban on endangered seafood such as shark’s fin. Among Accor’s innovative approaches is Plant for the Planet, a unique reforestation program that has financed 3.5 million trees through the savings generated when guests reuse their towels.

Open to both PATA and non-PATA members, this year’s Awards attracted a total of 181 entries from 66 travel and tourism organisations.
