In response to news that Adani will self-fund its Reef-wrecking coal mine and start construction before Christmas, Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) spokesperson Imogen Zethoven, said;

“It defies belief that Adani is hell bent on pushing ahead with this climate-wrecking mine when Queensland is experiencing record breaking heatwaves, bushfires are burning across the state and our beautiful Reef could suffer another major bleaching event this summer.

“The world’s climate scientists have made it abundantly clear that to save our Great Barrier Reef we must have no new coal mines and shut all coal plants by 2030.

“The Morrison Government and the Labor Opposition must stop this dirty coal mine, which will accelerate dangerous climate change and risk a safe future for Australia.

“Any political party wanting a credible climate policy that Australians would accept must stop this mine and the nine mines in the Galilee that will follow.

“The Federal and Queensland Governments must resist Adani’s pressure to rubber stamp water approvals and extinguish native title rights. Adani is currently being prosecuted for polluting the Reef’s waters. They cannot be trusted with our Reef and our water.

“We will fight this to the end. This is not a done deal. Adani still needs environmental approvals. They don’t have native title access

“Our politicians should remember that most Australians do not want this mine.

“Our school kids are protesting around Australia tomorrow at the School Strike for Climate Action. This is only the beginning. Adani underestimates the Australian spirit. We will fight to defend our Reef against their dirty, dangerous coal mine.”
