An Easter surprise has come early at Darling Harbour’s WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo with the announcement of a new bilby joey! The adorable sprightly-eared joey was bred on-site as part of a conservation management program founded by the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) for the endangered species.

As part of the program, the female bilby who currently weighs just 420 grams, is destined to be released into the wild in a long-term effort to assist the plight of the species, and is the first animal bred for wild release by WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.

Once common across Australia, best estimates now put the country’s greater bilby population at less than 10,000 meaning the species is now considered to be declining towards extinction.

Guests are encouraged to come in to WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo in Darling Harbour and visit the little Easter Bilby these holidays before she hops off on her new journey!
