Australian adventurer Jon Muir, was awarded the Australian Geographic Society’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at a Gala Awards ceremony in Sydney this week.

The Award is the Society’s highest honour and recognizes Jon’s extraordinary life of exploration and adventure.  Jon is a legend in the global adventure community and long time friend and guide for Australian Adventure travel company, World Expeditions.

From making his first unsupported ascent of Everest in 1988, to his trek to the North Pole in 2000, to his 6,000km ocean traverse by sea kayak, Jon is arguably one of the most experienced adventurers in Australian history.

He holds several records, including for the first solo traverse on foot of Australia’s largest salt lake.  In 2001, Jon made history by becoming the first person to walk unsupported across Australia from South Australia’s Port Augusta to Burketown in Queensland’s Gulf Country, covering 2500km over 128 days.

In 2007, he trekked 1700km, unassisted, from the Spencer Gulf in South Australia, to the Geographic Centre of Australia.  Jon has received many accolades, including the Order of Australia and the Centenary Medal for contributions made to Australian Society.

The Young Adventurer of the Year was presented to Sam Mitchell who, at the age of 22, became the first person to complete the traverse of Australia’s most challenging four wheel drive track, the 1850km Canning Stock route, in Western Australia, on a fat bike.

According to World Expeditions’ Brad Atwal, who presented the Award, Sam is a great example of the power of the individual to push out personal boundaries and take on huge challenges.

“Sam is to be congratulated for his courage and determination in completing the challenge he had set himself,” Brad said.  “He’s a champion of sustainability and a dedicated seeker of adventurer.”
