egtmedia59Emirates derives “around 80%” of its Australian revenue from the trade, the airline says. It is sponsoring a new scholarship in conjunction with the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA).

The AFTA 2014 National Travel Industry Awards have just opened.

The AFTA NTIA (as the awards are known) recognise and reward excellence in the Australian travel industry, through a process which includes nominating, voting and judging potential candidates, ending with the announcement of the winners at a gala awards dinner.

This year, the gala dinner will be held on Saturday 19 July at the Hordern Pavilion, Moore Park, Sydney, for the second year after a successful move in 2013. itcmchina_en_250x250_animated

AFTA will work with its major sponsor Qantas, and other sponsors.

A limited number of opportunities re still available for interested parties to participate as lucky door prize sponsors, providing a prize to be drawn on the night, AFTA event manager Alex Cook says.

Three nomination forms are used in the NTIA process – one form for travel agents who wish to nominate suppliers and another for suppliers to nominate travel agents in the various categories. The third form is the Emirates Travel Consultant Scholarship self nomination application. Nominations will only be accepted via these online nomination forms and each nomination will be verified before proceeding to the voting stage of the awards.

Both agents and suppliers may submit nominations in the Best Registered Travel Industry Training Institution category. Self-nominations will be accepted as well as nominations from others, but only in the categories of Best Travel Writer and Best Travel Agent Technology Innovation. The Emirates Travel Consultant Scholarship is self-nomination only.

The nomination period will run until 5pm (EDST) Friday 28 February.

Meanwhile, AFTA is promoting it newest category in the awards, the Emirates Travel Consultant Scholarship. The scholarship will recognise an individual with less than three years experience in the travel industry who demonstrates they have the willingness and potential to further their career by undertaking recognised studies. This category will be self-nominated only, so don’t be shy.

The scholarship will provide:

  • Up to AUD 10,000 towards a related education course to enhance the winner’s career.
  • Business Class trip for two to Dubai to meet key leaders at Emirates including a five-night itinerary to experience everything that Dubai has to offer.
  • A trip to Melbourne as a guest of Emirates in the Melbourne Cup Marquee.

All five finalists will each receive one ticket to the NTIA gala dinner.

“This is a fantastic way for up-and-coming travel consultants to further their skills and become entrepreneurs of the travel industry in the future,” AFTA Chief Executive Jayson Westbury commented.

Emirates’ vice president Australasia, Bryan Banston, added a pertinent point:  “With around 80% of our revenue in Australia derived from trade, Emirates is committed to its travel trade partners.

“We’re very proud to partner with AFTA and join as a Gold Sponsor. This collaboration allows us to nurture and educate young talent to support the growth of the travel trade industry in Australia,” Banston said.
