There are some exciting new start up businesses on Norfolk Island that are adding great value to tourist holiday experiences. One in particular is the Jolly Roger Bar and Restaurant, situated in the main shopping precinct of Burnt Pine in a distinctive A frame building on Taylors Road. Now Norfolk Island has an amazing array of eateries dotted all over the island including fine dining restaurants, bistros, clubs, cafes and takeaways, but the Jolly Roger is something new again.
Owner-manager, Matt Zarb, opened ‘The Jolly’ after falling in love with Norfolk Island on a visit the previous year. He and his wife chose its name and theme to complement Norfolk’s connections with seafarers, mutineers and naval folk over the past two and half centuries. Matt’s background is music, having spent many years in the USA, playing with some of the best known musicians in rock and blues. So the Jolly Roger rocks each night with Matt’s incredible playing, singing and entertaining to the delight of locals and visitors alike.
While Matt keeps the patrons tapping their toes, clapping their hands and singing along, (yes, you will do it too), the chefs deliver beautifully prepared meals from a well balanced menu. The young staff are efficient and friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed, lighthearted and celebratory.
The Jolly Roger is open all nights except Monday and is fully licensed.
