AIME 2014 Report Visit England

March 11, 2014 Headline News, Trade Events No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59England has always been a big destination for meetings and conferences, with London the jewel in the crown. But it’s not all about London, according to Simon Gidman, head of business events for Visit England.

According to Gidman, PCOs and event organisers should also consider places such as Manchester, just voted the European City of Science for 2016; Birmingham, a major centre for large congresses and association events; Liverpool, which has undergone a vast regeneration over the past five years; and Newcastle, one of the friendliest cities in England.

“We’ve put together seven suggested itineraries for seven different parts of England,” says Gidman. “We’ve got some interesting things in our itineraries, like fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast; dining in a castle; or Spitbank Fort, in the middle of the Solent, [near Portsmouth]; the recently opened Mary Rose Museum, which is a great venue for a gala dinner; driving typical classic cars around the Cotswalds or the south-west; and places like the Eden project which is a fantastic project in Cornwall.

“One of the [other] things we find is that maybe people have been to London on a personal holiday, but they may not have done the things they can do in London on an incentive.

Gidman cites examples such as taking a Tall Ship down the Thames; opening Tower Bridge; new buildings where special events can be held, such as The Shard and ‘The Gherkin’.

“A lot of people talk about new destinations for incentives, and they’re always looking for somewhere new and exciting … the suggestions we’re putting forward are really presenting these destinations as new destinations.
