Air Canada plane ploughs into array of antennas

March 31, 2015 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59An Air Canada A320 has sustained major damage when it touched down over 300 metres short of a runway and ploughed into an antenna array.

Safety officials at the Canadian east coast city of Halifax, where the accident occurred, said the aircraft lost its landing gear in the smash. The impact sent over 20 passengers and crew to hospital, with all except one being discharged later the same day, Sunday.

At a press conference, Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada official Mike Cunningham said an engine had come off, as well as the landing gear, when the aircraft slammed into the antenna array.

The accident happened shortly after midnight and weather may have been a factor.

The plane had flown in from Toronto and had 133 passengers and five crew aboard.

Passengers aboard saw a big flash and think the plane may have struck a power line.
