Air India B777 blows tyres on landing with engine fire

July 16, 2014 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59An Air India B777 flight with 313 passengers aboard blew multiple tyres on landing after returning to Newark Liberty International Airport in the US state of New Jersey. The plane turned round and returned because one of its two giant engines was on fire.

Passengers and crew noticed the fire within minutes of take-off, the Times of India reported. The blaze spread along the outside of the port side engine (left when facing forward).

An Air India spokesman told the paper later that “the flight returned to Newark because of an engine problem. Passengers are being accommodated on different airlines and on our flight to Delhi.” http://www.pata.org/events/pata-travel-mart-2014

Sources told the Times of India the plane’s captain was forced to make an overweight landing, adding ominously “in such an event some fuse plugs melt as brakes heat up”. That squares with other reports that tyres blew out on landing.

Simon Hradecky’s Aviation Herald reported that the affected plane was an Air India Boeing 777-300 performing flight AI-144 from Newark to Mumbai with 292 passengers and 21 crew aboard.

“It was climbing out of Newark’s runway 22R when the crew of another aircraft reported seeing flames and smoke out of the #1 engine (GE90, left hand). In the meantime the crew of the Boeing 777, already on departure frequency, stopped the climb at 2000 feet reporting the left hand engine had been shut down and returned to Newark for a safe landing on runway 22R about 22 minutes after departure.”

The aircraft came to a stop on an adjacent taxiway with multiple tyres blown, the airport said. A bird strike was suspected initially, but that proved not to be the case.

Investigations are under way.
