Air Tahiti Nui Announces Another Year of Positive Financial Results

Tahiti’s national carrier Air Tahiti Nui has announced positive financial results for the fifth consecutive year with strong visitor demand for French Polynesia credited with the success.

Air Tahiti Nui CEO Michel Monvoisin revealed that the airline experienced passenger growth of 1.4 per cent in 2016, with a total of 480,000 passengers carried.

The company’s total revenue in 2016 was 298 million Euros (A$440 million) with a net income after tax of 18.8 million Euros (A$28 million).

Mr Monvoisin said the overall economic environment remained favourable.

“These results are new proof of the good health of the company and the dynamism of tourism in our islands. The local demand remains strong, showing that the economy of French Polynesia is improving. Air Tahiti Nui is now fully supporting the development of Tahiti and is providing a historical contribution to the budget of the country. This is a fair return after the difficult years the company went through and the support provided at that time by our main shareholder, the government of French Polynesia,” Mr Monvoisin said.

In 2016, inbound tourism to Tahiti increased by five per cent, largely driven by the destination’s top two markets – the US (39 per cent) and France (20 per cent) – which together account for more than half of all visitors to the islands.

From next year, Air Tahiti Nui will take delivery of two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as part of a fleet transition which will be completed with the leasing of two further B-787 aircraft by 2019.

To continue the momentum of tourism growth in the Islands of Tahiti, Air Tahiti Nui is working closely with the Polynesian government and tourism board to attract investors to Tahiti to create more capacity across the islands to curb the lack of rooms.
