A survey of more than 1,000 Aussie business travellers found that as a nation, we’re guilty of some greasy convenience while on the road for work, with almost two thirds of Aussies (58%) eating at least one takeaway meal a day, and one in 10 resorting to takeaway for all three meals.

Yet despite our poor eating habits, most Australian business travellers would prefer a home cooked meal. The humble homemade roast chook came out on top as the most craved home cooked meal while away for work, followed by the non-fuss Aussie staple of meat and three veg.

60% of Australian business travellers blame lack of access to kitchen facilities or inability to reheat food as the reason why they resort to unhealthy habits when travelling for work. Not surprisingly, when choosing where to stay on a work trip, the research also revealed access to full kitchen facilities ranked more important to business travellers than a desk space and second only to Wi-Fi.

Despite employee wellness being at the top of the workplace agenda, the survey found that over a third (37%) of all Aussies admitted to eating more when travelling for work, and just 7% shunned fast food when on a business trip.

The findings come as more Australian business travellers embrace Airbnb for Work. Sydney is among the top 10 most popular global destinations for business travellers using the platform, with workers travelling from Sydney to Melbourne and vice-versa some of the biggest users of Airbnb for Work in the world.

Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb’s Country Manager for Australia, said given employee wellness is a key priority for many Australian businesses, it’s no surprise more work travellers are embracing Airbnb for Work.

“There are now more than 500,000 businesses globally actively using the platform for employee travel. The popularity of Airbnb for Work has certainly been driven by an increased desire by business travellers to stay in listings, serviced apartments or hotels with facilities that make it easier to stay healthy on the road, such as fully equipped kitchens, food re-heating facilities and outdoor areas that make it easy to squeeze in a quick workout.

“We’ve particularly noticed a big spike in health conscious younger business travellers embracing Airbnb for Work – in the 12 months to July this year, there’s been a 60% year on year increase in 18 to 25 year olds using Airbnb for work trips,” Wheeldon said.
