Airbnb racism row as woman ‘pushed down stairs’

Astonishing footage of a female Airbnb tourist hurtling down a flight of stairs – allegedly having been pushed by the Airbnb host for being slow to check out – has surfaced on Instagram and has whipped up a storm over racism.

The Dutchman (white) who allegedly pushed the Airbnb renter (black) down the stairs of a flat in Amsterdam was arrested on Sunday and is now under investigation although no longer in custody, according to police., which reports latest news from the Netherlands, quoted the Dutch broadcaster NOS saying on Sunday that the row concerned the time of check-out for a property that had been rented out by the man’s wife.

The victim was black and female and the Dutchman white and male, which has struck a very bad chord. The victim was reportedly a friend and employee of South African photographer Zanele Muholi, whose work is being exhibited in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, NOS said.

Muholi apparently portrays black lesbian, homosexual and transgender identity in South Africa, introducing yet more issues into the story.

Muholi alleged on Instagram that racism was involved, since her friend is black.

In the video on Instagram, a woman is heard asking a man why he is being emotional and taking her things.

He then apparently pushes her, or at least that’s one interpretation. She falls all the way to the bottom of a flight of stairs, the man curses, runs down and calls out to get an ambulance.

Muholi’s Instagram post claims: “She collapsed and ended up in hospital. She suffered internal injuries and bruises…This is racism and can’t be justified…violence on black bodies as you can see in this video.”

A police spokesman told “It was related to a man and woman and argument about the check-out time of an Airbnb rental. The man is now free. The police are now investigating and the man is a suspect, but the woman is fortunately out of hospital.”

In latest developments, NOS reported that Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky plans to contact the woman ‘pushed’ down the stairs, and the company’s diversity director David King has called it “repulsive behaviour” and threatened to ban the host from the platform for life.
