Airline shock – was giant bunny locked in freezer?

The saga of Simon the giant rabbit, who died during a flight with United Airlines between London and Chicago, has taken a nasty turn, with a demand for money and allegations the rabbit may have died while locked in a freezer.

Simon, a Continental Giant rabbit about a metre long and a resident of England, was 10-months old and expected to achieve record-breaking size when fully grown. See: Death of metre-long Simon haunts airline

United Airlines insists Simon was alive when the transatlantic flight landed. In a new twist, sinister rumours are circulating that Simon may inadvertently have been placed for up to 16 hours in a freezer by airline employees.

Simon, the son of Darius, world’s longest rabbit, had been bought from its English breeder Annette Edwards by an Iowa-based syndicate and was heading to his new home in the US. The aim of his new owners, according to USA Today, was to win the Iowa State Fair’s biggest rabbit contest in August.

Guy Cook, a lawyer from Des Moines, Iowa, told a press conference that Simon’s owners want an independent investigation into the rabbit’s death.

Cook said United cremated the rabbit following its death, without consulting its owners. This was effectively “destroying evidence” by making an autopsy impossible.

USA Today cited a letter from Cook: “Whatever the cause of Simon’s death may be, Simon died in the care of United Airlines and its decision to destroy his remains establishes a reckless disregard for the Simon Group’s rights and are indicative of the negligent care United Airlines provided Simon.”

The Simon syndicate is demanding compensation from United for the purchase price of the rabbit, shipping costs and economic loss. United has until next Monday to respond before a lawsuit is filed.
