Since 1999, Abercrombie & Kent guests staying at Sanctuary Retreats Stanley’s and Baines’ Camps have been enjoying unique and life-changing experiences with the three semi-habituated elephants there.
An inspirational initiative has been introduced to offer a similar experience to local school children who are accommodated at Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp and participate in engagement with the elephants as well as other wildlife-focused activities.
Having grown up with intense fear and resentment towards elephants after witnessing family members injured or killed or seeing crops damaged and other property destroyed, the attitude and perception towards elephants, and towards other wildlife in general, is often negative among villagers. By the end of the experience the children have a great understanding and respect for elephants and other wildlife, which is a positive influence on other members of their community.
A&K Philanthropy, in conjunction with The Elephant Outreach Program, is relaunching the project with children from the Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust offering this educational and life-changing experience to school groups starting in February 2017.
