A&K Philanthropy pedals into Botswana

Last year A&K Philanthropy (AKP), in partnership with Working Bikes and Wheels of Change, facilitated the delivery of 1,200 bicycles to the Nakatindi community in Zambia. The Chipego Bike Shop was duly established by women from the community and its resounding success has led to the opening of a second shop in Kasane, Botswana.http://join.travelmanagers.com.au/

The Dipetsana Women’s Bike Shop marks AKP’s first livelihood project in Botswana, with 800 second-hand bikes arriving from the U.S. and a team of local women trained to run it. The shop is strategically located on one of the busiest roads in Kasane and next to the Chobe Women’s Basketry Shop.

The response from staff at nearby Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero has been overwhelming, with 15 bikes already sold and orders in place for 15 more. With high demand anticipated, the ladies are already looking into how to mobilise and ship two more containers of bikes by June 2017 to avoid running out of stock.

Access to bikes in this community helps to sustain livelihoods, create jobs, improve medical care and empower women and has benefits which are felt far and wide.

Like the shop in Zambia, Dipetsana also has a mission to support charitable projects in the community. The shop has already donated ten bikes to Pandamatenga Primary School as part of Botswana’s 50th Anniversary celebrations and one bike to Elephants Without Borders during the March for Elephants and Rhinos in September 2016.
