Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) is delighted to announce its support of Tasmania’s inspirational Raptor Refuge.

Located south of Hobart, Raptor Refuge is the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere which, under the guidance of passionate conservationist Craig Webb, takes in injured birds of prey and, with a small team of volunteers, rehabilitates them for return to the wild. Threatened by power lines, farming, habitat loss and wind farms, well over a hundred wedge-tailed eagles, and many more raptors, are killed each year and the threats are constant. There are fewer than 120 breeding pairs of eagles left in Tasmania today and they are a threatened species in dire need of protection.

Located in a wilderness area, the refuge comprises a number of aviaries, including the largest flight aviary in the country, educational displays and a clinic where birds are cared for and brought back to health in readiness for release back into the wild. AKP’s investment will support the construction of a new, larger, flight aviary to enable the rehabilitation of greater numbers of Tasmanian raptors and improved facilities for research and education.

A&K’s Regional Managing Director Australia/Asia Pacific, Sujata Raman, said of the new collaboration, “A&K Philanthropy Australia is delighted to be able to support this remarkable conservation enterprise. Caring for rare wildlife and pristine landscapes is one of the principles of A&K Philanthropy and we are so pleased to support a project right here in Australia that is doing such important work in the area of conservation and the protection of endangered species.”

A&K travellers in Tasmania will have the unique opportunity to visit the refuge and enjoy a level of access beyond anything that is offered to any other guest. In addition to visiting the aviaries and tactile displays, guests are invited into the bird care and exercise areas to observe individual patients in the various stages of recovery and to study procedures which adequately prepare the birds for release, such as beak trimming, weigh ins and husbandry techniques.

A&K Philanthropy is 100% funded by Abercrombie & Kent globally with a donation made to AKP on behalf of every guest travelling. With over 40 projects supported worldwide, AKP’s vision is to help nature thrive and cultures flourish by positively impacting lives and livelihoods in the communities where A&K guests travel.
