A&K’s Safe Havens

In an increasingly uneasy world, discerning travellers are looking for politically stable, welcoming destinations where city streets are safe, disease and petty crime is low and where the locals are pleased to see you. Luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent lists its favourite safe havens for discerning travellers.

At the top of the list of the world’s safest destinations as rated by think tank, Vision of Humanity, Iceland has little crime, no disputed borders and a peace-loving people. It’s a remote island and the most unpredictable events you’ll come across are usually linked to the weather!

New Zealand

Civil conflict and violent crime are unfamiliar concepts in New Zealand. Travellers are more likely to be rendered speechless by the jaw-dropping landscapes than by any confronting crowd behaviour and be terrified by nothing more than the adrenalin rush of a bungy jump or a heart-stopping canyon swing.

The polar realms

A journey to the polar regions is as far away from civilisation as you can get. A&K’s expeditions to the Antarctic and Arctic are on board luxury small ships M/V Le Boreal and M/V Le Lyrial where the crew and Expedition Staff care only for your wellbeing and your personal enrichment. Even looming icebergs won’t deter the ship’s captains who have decades of experience navigating these ice class vessels through polar waters.

One of the world’s oldest civilisations, Armenia lies just south of the great Caucasus Mountain range and, despite its relative proximity to Syria and Iraq, is a safe haven for travellers. Its territory once included Mount Ararat and it was the first country in the world to officially embrace Christianity. Visiting Armenia today is a spiritual experience, with a multitude of beautiful monasteries and churches set in breath-taking landscapes.

A country which rates itself on GNH (gross national happiness) clearly has little to worry about when it comes to safety. Its leaders foster political stability, social harmony and Bhutanese culture with locals required to wear traditional dress in public. Surrounded by the Himalaya, this secluded and land-locked destination is one of the world’s most peaceful.

By South American standards, Chile is tidy and prosperous and one of the continent’s most stable countries with the fastest growing economy. With the exception of the Pinochet era of the 1970s and ‘80s, Chile has remained relatively free of the coups which have plagued its near neighbours. It is breathtakingly beautiful with an exciting food and wine scene and a sophisticated infrastructure for the discerning traveller.

One of the last travel frontiers, Mongolia is also one of the safest with one of the lowest crime rates in Asia. Travellers can cosy up in a traditional ger sleeping simply out on the steppe and experiencing the legendary Mongol hospitality. With A&K, guests can travel there with someone who knows the ropes. Photographer Palani Mohan has first hand experience there and offers a unique insight to the Golden Eagle hunters.

One of Europe’s safest countries, Slovenia is also clean and green with an admirable sustainable tourism model. Its people are warm, welcoming, honest and reliable. It has some of the most mind-blowing alpine scenery plus glittering lakes, caves, castles and a fresh and flavoursome cuisine with influences from neighbouring Italy, Austria and Hungary.
