New Zealand is a favourite destination for Australian sun seekers and snow lovers alike with new data from Cheapflights.com.au revealing the most popular season to jump the ditch is autumn, with 34 per cent of searches for getaways during this period, followed by summer (26 per cent) and winter (25 per cent).
Nathan Graham, Regional Sales Manager ANZ at Cheapflights, said that with return airfares from as little as $350, it’s no wonder New Zealand remains one of our top searched locations year round. He noted however, that recent data indicated Aussies are sticking to the tourist spots.
“Just a short flight away, the big four cities continue to attract the most travellers with Auckland airport seeing 56 per cent of Aussies pass through its gates, and Christchurch, Queenstown and Wellington receiving another 40 per cent between them.
“Although these are the top searched destinations, we shouldn’t overlook the hidden gems across both the North and South Islands. Tauranga, Dunedin and Nelson are emerging as great jumping off points for travellers keen to explore like a local, and we expect this to increase as demand encourages additional flights and new routes.”
