Australia’s largest in-flight caterer, Alpha Flight Services, has opened a new state-of-the-art facility at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport. At 11,000 square meters (118,000 square feet), the purpose-built facility is the largest and most sophisticated catering facility in the country, three times larger than its previous building and capable of producing over 750,000 meals a month.

The facility has been designed with optimal efficiency and workflow ergonomics in mind. A “push/pull” system, where ingredients and equipment are brought to work areas, has been created to achieve higher levels of productivity. The facility also features a dedicated bakery unit offering over 150 bakery and pastry items and a presentation kitchen and lounge for airline customers to preview new menus.

Furthermore, to ensure that staff welfare and comfort are taken care of, Alpha Flight Services has included ample car parking, modern changing facilities, and a staff cafeteria designed in a relaxing café style for its 500 skilled professionals, including 55 chefs.

The new facility was completed at a cost of AUD$50 million, which includes Alpha Flight Services’ investment and Melbourne Airport Authority’s base build of the building. Alpha Flight Services currently creates meals for more than 4,000 flights a month from the new facility, with capacity to increase these by 50 per cent.

Gary Chapman, President, dnata, who inaugurated the new facility, said: “As inbound and outbound travel in Australia continues to see healthy growth for both the business and leisure sectors, we see exciting new opportunities to serve our airline customers. This investment in the new Melbourne facility reflects our confidence in the market as well as our continuous commitment to deliver the highest standards in in-flight meals to our airline customers and their passengers”.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Property Linc Horton said the catering facility is a wonderful asset for the airport.

“We’re pleased to have Alpha Flight Services operate on Melbourne Airport’s doorstep. It’s not only a great fit for the company and our airline customers but also the community surrounding the precinct. The airport is already one of Victoria’s largest employers with more than 16,000 people working in aviation or a career that supports the airport’s wider  operation, and by adding Alpha Flight Services’ kitchen we’re enhancing the existing job opportunities with exciting careers in hospitality,” said Mr Horton.

Alpha Flight Services is a member of dnata, one of the world’s largest air services providers offering ground handling, cargo, travel and flight catering services in 84 countries across six continents. A home-grown Australian company, Alpha Flight Services was founded in 1982 and has since grown into a network of 11 purpose-built commercial kitchens across the country, including in Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Coolangatta, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Townsville. The company employees over 1,700 employees and creates more than 1.5 million meals a month that serve 16,000 flights. Beyond Australia, Alpha Flight Services operates flight catering services in key airports in Europe, the Middle East and the US.
