In the Northern Hemisphere summer, Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts will launch a new property in beautiful Yangshuo, Guangxi, China.

The new resort, Banyan Tree Yangshuo, is situated in what is known as the “diamond waterway” located in Fuli Town along the lower reach of the Li River. The township is unique compared to the beautiful ancient towns of Yangshuo renowned for its beauty, and for being the setting of the world-famous painted fans of China. The new resort will provide a novel concept for visitors looking to experience a modern village featuring rich local elements.

Visitors can reach Yangshuo via Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, which is connected by major Asian carriers as well as several daily flights from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Yangshuo’s picturesque landscape of rolling hills and pristine waters is like something out of a painting. Take a boat trip along the Li River and you are immersed in an intensely beautiful vista.  Here you can be dazzled by the one of the best karst cave systems in the world, formed by hundreds of limestones. Over the centuries, the picturesque landscape has attracted numerous travellers including some of the leading literary figures of ancient China.

Traditionally, a typical travel itinerary would include a boat trip along the Li River and a cultural show (Impression of Liu Sanjie) at West Street (Xijie). Unlike other ancient towns of Yangshuo, Fuli Town has been largely untouched by tourism.

According to local sayings, “three hills embracing the old town with the water offering a retreat”. It is in Yangshuo where the Li River runs wider than at any other place, offering a panorama like no other. There is a scenic spot along the river called the Nine-Horse Mural Hill. Visitors often describe this as heaven on earth, being able to witness the absolute beauty of nature often forgotten in busy everyday life. The Nine-Horse Mural Hill can be accessed along a hilly path. Half way up the hill, there is a rock cave with an inscription that dates back to the Ming Dynasty.

The village of Liugong, with over 500 years of history, is a forgotten jewel by the Li River. Many historical sites have been preserved in the village from the Ming and Qing Dynasties like the Deyue Tower. During the wartime in the 1920s, Dr. Sun Yatsen – the Revolutionary Figure, stayed at the village for a night when he was traveling along the river.

Hometown of Traditional Painted Fans

The Fuli Town boasts a rich cultural history, it is said that almost every household here produces good painters. Fuli Town is named as the hometown of the traditional painted fans of China. This small town with fewer than 10,000 residents, has produced many leading artists, such as Li Zhen’ou, who is a master of bird painting. His works are now displayed at Tian’anmen Square and often have been presented as gifts to foreign leaders.

Fuli painted fans are made out of local bamboo and either traditional rice paper or silk. A series of processing work must be done before the fan is ready. Meticulous craftsmanship and creative talent are keys to this art. The paintings on the fans feature local landscape, scenery, flowers, birds, fish, horses, all created by local painters.

Since the early 1990s, this industry has grown rapidly. Now about 150 households and over 600 people are engaged in the production, with an annual output of over two million fans.

An Outdoor Paradise

The beautiful landscape along the Li River also offers some of the best places for outdoor sports like hiking, rock climbing, and rafting.

In China, there is no other place like Yangshuo for rock-climbing enthusiasts. Yangshuo is the undisputed paradise of rock climbing boasting some of the best rock walls and sceneries in the country. According to leading international rock climbing magazines, Yangshuo is the perfect destination for any die-hard climbing fan.

Biking is a good way of getting around Yangshuo and many rental services are available for visitors. This mode of sightseeing was popularised by the former U.S. president, Jimmy Carter. When preparing for his visit to Yangshuo, his team knew that they would miss a lot of the sights travelling by car so they decided to use bikes to experience the stunning beauty of Yangshuo up close.  In 2000, the local government built a 5km bike path with observation decks and resting places that locals often call the ‘Carter Path’.

The waterways around Fuli Town are great for canoeing, with the ideal scenic route starting from the ancient pier close to Banyan Tree Yangshuo, then down the river through the Nine-Horse Mural Hill to Liugong village.

Culinary Heaven

Yangshuo is famous for its distinct culinary experience. Local delicacies include beer fish, rice noodles and Dayou tea, which is often served in the morning.

Dayou tea originated from the local hillside areas. The tea is served in a special bowl in the shape of the number 7. The best bowls are usually handcrafted out of wood from grapefruit trees. A perforated ladle is used to serve, called tea screeners by the locals.  Visitors are given a bowl and a pair of chopsticks. The tea appears simple but there are a series of traditional processes to follow, including washing, frying, bashing, and mixing before one can enjoy the final product.

Dayou tea is commonly flavored with chives, coriander leaves, fried peanuts or beans and served with popcorn, fruits, cakes, and pastries. Dayou tea is a suitable drink for breakfast, lunch or as a late night snack. In rural areas, when people come together for meetings, Dayou tea is often served.

A Tranquil Getaway

Surrounded by rolling hills and pristine waters, Banyan Tree Yangshuo offers a restful escape from fast paced city living. Banyan Tree Yangshuo is a one-hour drive from Guilin Liangjiang International Airport and 15 minutes from downtown of Yangshuo.
