Latin America and Polar specialists, Chimu Adventures, have made cruises to Antarctica more affordable at a price of just over AU$7000 so that the continent can be accessed by a wider demographic of travellers. This comes at a time where there is an increased demand for expeditions to this destination.

Their 11 day Discover Antarctica itinerary aboard the Ocean Endeavour, departing during the 2020/2021 season, starts from just AU$7090 per person for a berth in a triple cabin. This is one of the best value Antarctica voyages available currently, yet quality and sustainability have not been compromised.

Antarctica may previously have been viewed as a preserve for only wealthy travellers due to its extreme, isolated and remote location but Chimu want to break this paradigm. River cruises in Europe, a popular choice for travellers, are currently on the market at around the same price as Chimu’s cheapest Antarctica expedition.

Chimu feel that all demographics would benefit from seeing the fragility of Antarctica so that they can return as an ambassador for its future protection. This sentiment particularly applies to younger travellers who may have been priced out of the Antarctic market in the past.

Chimu’s co-founder Greg Carter explains: “We have made a conscious effort to make our 2020/2021 departures more affordable so that the opportunity to see the beauty and importance of Antarctica can be opened up. We want the luxury of travelling to Antarctica to be in the experience of it and the environmental perspectives gained, rather than the price tag.”

Affordable voyages have not been to the detriment of sustainability and quality. The departures aboard the Ocean Endeavour, a ship Chimu are sailing in partnership with Peregrine, will be operated to strict environmental standards. There will be no more than 199 passengers per departure, no single use plastics on board, every expedition will be carbon offset and only sustainable seafood will be served.

Being a small ship, it will be able to access remote areas which larger vessels are unable to; witnessing scenery such as glaciers and icebergs and wildlife like penguins, seals. Accommodation onboard is akin to a boutique hotel with comfortable lodgings, a wellness spa with sauna and saltwater pool and a gym. The price of the voyage includes all accommodation, food, activities and polar jacket/boots while on board. Additional activities will include kayaking, photography, yoga, snowshoeing, hiking and camping.

Solo travellers can also take advantage of their own cabin on Discover Antarctica for the same price as a berth in a twin cabin; a designated single cabin is only AU$11390.

For travellers who would like to explore the raw beauty of the Falkland Islands, Chimu have combined the Falkland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, also on board the Ocean Endeavour. This 19 day journey starts from AU$13647 for a berth in a triple cabin and is one of the most competitively priced Falklands itineraries available.

With the popularity of Antarctica increasing, berths in triple cabins are predicted to be very popular. Chimu encourage Antarctic travellers to get in touch with one of their Destination Specialists, the majority of whom have been to Antarctica, to secure their place.
