Amid magnificent scenery, the former chairman of one of China’s most iconic confectionary brands has died after being struck by a flying rock apparently kicked by a monkey.
Weng Mao, 67, used to head the Guan Sheng Yuan Group, famous in Asia for its White Rabbit milk candy. The association of rabbit and monkey (both Chinese zodiac animals) and the bizarre nature of Weng’s death caused the story to go viral in China.
Weng was rushed to a local hospital but died there soon afterwards, the South China Morning Post reported.
The incident occurred at Yuntai Mountain, a scenic spot in Henan province in central China. The mountain is home to wild monkeys, which sometimes descend from the cliff tops to grab food and belongings from tourists, a report in the Singapore Straits Times said.
Weng was gazing at magnificent scenery when hit on the head by a flying rock. Yuntai Mountain employees said an inspection later had confirmed that monkeys had kicked rocks from the mountain onto tourists below, according to a police statement sent to Sina.com.cn.
